What are 3 Types of SEO?

3 Common Types of SEO

When it comes to search engine optimization there are many topics we could cover. Today we are talking about 3 types of SEO. That is on-page, off-page, and technical SEO. These are some of the common techniques you will use but they are not the only types that exist. We will leave those for another time.

On-Page SEO

On-page SEO is what I specialize in. The main purpose is to acquire organic traffic from search engines without the use of paid advertising. Here is some of what we do to optimize a post in this way.

Keyword Research

Keywords are king in search engine optimization and they are what we prioritize in on-page SEO. We want to use those selected keywords in our copy several times without making it sound robotic. We should make sure our content is balanced, informed, and matches the search intent of users. We should use our keywords in headings, meta-descriptions, and our urls.

Headings

Headings are important real estate when it comes to our content writing. This is where we want to put a lot of emphasis on what we are talking about. It provides a structure to our content and helps search engines understand what we are saying. It also breaks up text making things easier to read.

Images

Images are also an important part of our on-page SEO tactics. We want images to break up text but they also provide image seo. Title your images with your keywords and always provide alt text for accessibility. This is another path to your content that will show up in search!

Off-Page SEO

Off-Page search engine optimization is what happens outside your content. These techniques are important too as they increase the likelihood that your content will rank at #1. These tactics show that people like and trust your content. Here are a few to consider.

Link Building

Link building is the most important thing you can do to increase the credibility of your content and increase its rank for competitive keywords. There are many ways to do this but it most often comes in the form of requests for people to check out your content and link if they like it. What is important is to keep up the quality of your content and make it something worth linking too! Become a great resource for your community.

Social Media Promotion

Social media is another important part of off-page SEO techniques. These links won’t help your rank but will help you bring in traffic and increase your visibility. This directly impacts the perception of your content its popularity and trustworthiness which can ultimately boost your search engine optimization in the form of recognition in search results.

Guest Blogging

Guest blogging won’t increase your rank but it also provides the benefit of increasing your credibility with your community. Expertise count for a lot in the Google algorithm. So much so it is part of it’s E-A-T guideline. Comes from a search quality assurance document from Google itself. It outlines what matters for good rankings Expertise, Authority, and Trustworthiness. That is why these off-page techniques are so important we want to boost these aspect of our content as well as providing context with our on-page techniques.

Technical SEO

Technical search engine optimization is everything we do with the backend of our website and its structure. It is considered technical because it often involves digging into the code. Though, if you are using WordPress this is significantly easier to deal with. That is because we can use Plugins to deal with the code without having to know a single line!

Speed

I would say the greatest impact to your organic search rankings from technical SEO is how fast your website is. We know this is a key component for google searches mobile first index. Ways to speed up your website is to use a responsive design, use a caching plugin, and minify your css and javascript.

Information Architecture

Have you ever heard that your most important content should only be one click away while navigating your website? That’s information architecture. How your content is laid out in posts and pages structurally. I’m not an expert in this but reading “Don’t Make Me Think” was super helpful in understanding how to setup a website for usability.

Structured Data

Structured data is the meta information that tells search engines specific things about our content. For example, how open graph tags tell services like Twitter how to display our content on their platform. This is important for websites that do things like reviews because some structured data will appear in Google Search.
